Temat: Synth with built in laptop.... any suggestions on this?
Any audio recording of any kind is probably out of the question. Bah humbug! I got 8 tracks realtime mixdown at 16/44 out of a 60MHz PowerMac. Might I suggest investigating the dedicated media/audio distributions of Linux, such as pure:dyne, dyne:bolic, ubuntu studio, AGNULA, DEMUDI etc. dyne:bolic especially is set up for low end machines. And another OS you might consider is DOS ;) There are similar threads scattered around this forum. Do a bit of thorough searching and you should turn them up.

Temat: MS-DOS / Linux Pattern Sequenzer for old Laptop?
Once upon a time, there was a thread where we were discussing the hardware seq which has now given birth to the sram module monster ;) Some of the people on the thread discussed an embedded PC running linux, and so after my time away, and with the recent activity on the linux audio scene, I thought, maybe this really is worth a try.... Well, long story short.... Linux still crashes, just like windows. Back to dedicated hardware for me. BTW, I tried dyne:bolic, agnula, and Planet CCRMA FC3 and found them all to be rather good. Dyne:bolic is pretty darned cool but hard to install or upgrade stuff as it's built from scratch and that means no package manager..

Shareware Music Machine: DOS and Linux Harmony Central: DOS You could also try AGNULA: a complete GNU/Linux Audio distribution and Dyne:bolic The ultimate setup (maybe) would be a good ISA Soundblaster with one of the sequencer programs with editing support for the onboard FM synth, and a Yamaha XG daughtercard.

After another week, testing and searching the web..... I kindof have a conclusion... I guess best software option realizing this "project" is: Use a Linux distro with realtime kernel. I guess ranked from top: Pure:dynehttp://www. agnula.info/, JAD http://jacklab.org Sounds: ZynAddSubFX http://zynaddsubfx.sourceforge.net Hardware: Small factor motherboard with good cpu (AMD64 2GHz, 1GB ram, 2.5" harddrive, CF storage for pathes/instruments. Soundcard: Onboard with spdif I/O Graphics: none My plan/hope is to boot this with no xwindows, starting jackserver with zynaddsubfx patched to i/o.
